We appreciate your interest in trying our beta software for transferring Audiofy audiobook chip content to Windows Media Player, where you can then sync the audio with any PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media players you own. You can also use Windows Media Player as a second way to listen to audiobook chips on your computer, in addition to the Audiofy playback application included on each audiobook chip.

What You Need


Transferring audiobook chip content to Windows Media Player currently requires a computer running Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 2000, with Windows Media Player 10 or 11 installed. Windows Media Player can be downloaded for free from Microsoft (click here).

You also need an SD memory card slot or adapter for inserting audiobook chips into your computer, such as the Audiofy USB Reader (click here) or media card readers typically used with digital cameras. Some computer models and printers with features for digital photography offer built-in SD memory card slots.

A connection to the Internet is required at the time you transfer your audiobook chip content, and when you sync the audio with any PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media player.

To listen to audiobook chip content on the go, you will need a media player with PlaysForSure, "secure WMA" or "WMA-DRM" support. This feature is often listed on the packaging of devices otherwise labeled as MP3 players, available in the electronics section of local discount department stores or electronics retailers. While some models may provide a built-in SD Card slot for expansion, you will still need to use a computer to transfer audiobook chip content to the device. (Audiobook chips will not play when inserted into the SD Card slots of MP3, PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media players.)

Computers running Apple Mac OS X are not able to transfer audiobook chip content to Windows Media Player, PlaysForSure media players or "secure WMA" devices, with the exception of Intel-based Apple computers running Microsoft Windows XP using Apple's Boot Camp software.

The installer you download places our updated software on each audiobook chip you would like to transfer. Use this updated software on your audiobook chip to transfer audiobook chip content, rather than the installer first downloaded to your computer. For a small number of audiobook chips, customers may see a message that our updated software could not be installed. If you receive this message, please contact us to obtain a replacement audiobook chip.

A connection to the Internet is required...

  • at the time you transfer your audiobook chip content, and
  • when you sync the audio with any PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media player

...in order for our application to communicate with a Windows Media licensing server. Therefore, if you have travel plans and intend to listen to your audiobook chip content on the go, remember to transfer your audiobook chip content to your media player at a time when you still have Internet access.

To begin transferring the audiobook chip content, click on the "File" menu in the upper left corner, and select "Zip to Windows Media." For step-by-step instructions, see below. Typically, each hour of audiobook content will take several minutes to transfer. The time required depends on the length of the audiobook, the speed of your computer and any processing time used by other software (disabling your screen saver may reduce the transfer time, for instance). Afterward, use the Windows Media Player application to listen to your audiobook or "sync" the audio with any PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" devices you own.

To move forward and backward in audiobook passages, use the button controls in the Windows Media Player application, on your PlaysForSure media player, or on your "secure WMA" device - the same way you would navigate other media on your player. Audiofy's audio navigation feature (clicking the "Info" button to hear an announcement of your current listening location) is not available in the Windows Media Player application, PlaysForSure media players or "secure WMA" devices. To use our audio navigation feature, play audiobook chips on the Audiofy Player, Palm or Pocket PC handheld PDAs, Treo or Windows Mobile smartphones, or computers running Microsoft Windows.


Step-By-Step Instructions


  1. Begin by downloading the most recent version of Audiofy's software. Then, insert an Audiofy audiobook chip into an SD card slot or adapter connected to your computer, such as the Audiofy USB Reader, or media card readers typically used with digital cameras. If the Audiofy playback window appears when the audiobook chip is inserted, close it at this time by clicking the "X" button in the upper right corner of the window.
  2. Double click the installer ("AudiofyBetaSetup") to update your Audiofy audiobook chip.
  3. In the first screen that appears, select the "drive letter" of your audiobook chip from the menu at the bottom of the window, just above the "OK" and "Cancel" buttons. Typically, the correct choice will be letter "e:", "f:" or higher, and a list of folders with names that include "AudiofyMac.app," "palm" and "ppc" will appear in the middle section of the window. Then, click the "OK" button. For a small number of audiobook chips, customers may see a message that our updated software could not be installed. If you receive this message, please contact us to obtain a replacement audiobook chip.
  4. On the next screen, click the "Install" button at the bottom of the window, accepting the software license agreement. A progress bar will indicate that several files are being copied to your audiobook chip. Within a few seconds, a screen with the message "Installation Complete!" should appear.
  5. Click the "Finish" button at the bottom of the window. If you would like to update other Audiofy audiobook chips you own, you can insert those audiobook chips and repeat the installation process, now or at a later time.
  6. Locate the updated Audiofy playback application on your audiobook chip, labeled "AudiofyPC," and click once or twice to begin using it. You can typically find the application by clicking once or twice on the "My Computer" item in the "Start" menu or on your desktop, then clicking once or twice on the icon that displays the abbreviated name for your audiobook chip. Then, click once or twice on the icon labeled "AudiofyPC." You can also try removing and reinserting your audiobook chip to reopen the Audiofy playback window.
  7. In the upper left corner of the Audiofy playback window, click on the "File" menu, then click on "Zip to Windows Media." At the center of the window that appears, click the "ChipZip" button to begin transferring your audiobook chip content.
  8. Typically, each hour of audiobook content will take several minutes to transfer. The time required depends on the length of the audiobook, the speed of your computer and any processing time used by other software (disabling your screen saver may reduce the transfer time, for instance). You may interrupt the transfer process at any time by clicking the "Cancel" button - audiobook passages already transferred will still be saved in Windows Media Player, but those passages will be processed again the next time you use the "Zip to Windows Media" feature.
  9. When the progress bar reaches 100 percent, a message will appear to confirm the transfer is complete. Clicking the "OK" button will return you to the Audiofy playback window.

At this point, you may use the Windows Media Player application to listen to your audiobook, or "sync" the audio with any PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media players you own. You may want to consult the instruction manual for your media player for additional guidance on how to "sync" Windows Media content with your device.

  1. Windows Media Player is located in the "Start" menu, either listed in the "All Programs" section, or opened by clicking the "Run..." icon, typing "wmplayer" and clicking the "OK" button.
  2. Hold down the [ ctrl ] (or "control") key in the lower left corner of your keyboard, and type the letter "M." This ensures that the Windows Media Player menu bar is displayed.
  3. At the top of the window, click on the "View" menu, then click on the "Go To" submenu, and then click on the word "Library."
  4. In the column on the left side of the window, find the item "My Playlists." If you see a plus sign ("+") in a box to the left of the words "My Playlists," click once or twice to expand the "My Playlists" section.
  5. In the "My Playlists" section, click on the name of your Audiofy audiobook chip. To play any chapter or passage listed in the center column, double click on the name of the passage.
  6. To transfer all of the audiobook chip content to a portable media player, use your right mouse button to click on the triangle icon immediately to the left of the playlist with the name of your audiobook chip, then use the left mouse button to click on "Add to Sync List." Alternately, you can transfer specific passages listed in the center column by using your right mouse button to click on the name of each passage, and then using the left mouse button to click on the words "Add to," followed by clicking on the words "Sync List" in the submenu to the right.
  7. Make sure your PlaysForSure or "secure WMA" media player is connected to your computer. Then, on your keyboard, hold down the [ alt ] key in the lower left corner and type the letter "L." In the menu that appears in the upper right corner of the window, click on the words "Sync List." At the top of the right column, verify that the name of your media player is shown, or else click to select it from the menu.
  8. At the bottom of the right column, click the words "Start Sync" to transfer your audiobook chip content to your media player. This process may take several minutes, depending on the length of the audiobook, and the speed of the USB interface between your computer and your media player.
